Hamel Family Wines:
A redesign built around how customers find, buy and join

Problem

After moving its online store to Commerce7, Hamel Family Wines needed its website to run smoothly on the new platform. Then it needed more: a site that showed the wines at their best and made it easy to buy them and join the Badger Clan Wine Club.

Background

Hamel Family Wines farms its estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and the Moon Mountain District with organic and biodynamic practices. The badger in its logo nods to three generations of University of Wisconsin alumni and gives the Badger Clan Wine Club its name. We started with Hamel in May 2021, designing its Mailchimp and Commerce7 email templates and auditing how the site worked with Commerce7.

Solution

In 2022 we redesigned the site from the customer journey up. We mapped how people find the wines, buy them and join the club, audited every page and asset, and rebuilt the structure in new wireframes. Then we built a custom WordPress theme with Commerce7 inside it, added Commerce7 personalization, and had real people test the site before launch. After launch, we kept improving it with analytics and heatmaps, and ran Hamel’s email and search.

From email templates to a full redesign

Our work with Hamel began with email templates in 2021 and grew into a full redesign of the site in 2022. After launch, we stayed on for the data, email and search work that kept the site improving.

Site remediation

Fixed the site after Hamel’s first Commerce7 migration, so it ran smoothly on the new platform.

CX and UX strategy

Mapped how Hamel’s customers find the wines, buy them and join the club, and shaped the site around it.

Sitemap and wireframes

Rebuilt the site’s structure and wireframed every page before design and development began.

Custom WordPress theme

Built a custom WordPress theme with Commerce7 inside it, so the wines and clubs sit within the site.

Commerce7 personalization

Set up Commerce7 personalization blocks to show visitors content suited to who they are.

User testing

Put the site in front of real people before launch and used their feedback to refine it.

Email templates

Designed Mailchimp, Commerce7 and Stripo templates so Hamel’s team could build on-brand emails in-house.

Data-driven UX updates

Used analytics and heatmaps to find where visitors stalled, then reworked pages and calls to action.

Accessibility

Ran monthly accessibility scans and fixed the issues they found.

Search and analytics

Set up Tag Manager and Google Analytics, and monitored rankings, backlinks and the Google Business Profile.

Hosting and maintenance

Hosted and maintained the site behind Cloudflare, with daily backups, security scans and updates tested on staging.
